Operation Day
Hi all. This is Sarah, Jack’s daughter. Today was surgery day, and it started at 10am. We got updates from the operating room every 2 hours letting us know how things were going. At 3pm, the surgeon called to let us know they were done and everything went great. The surgeon ended up replacing the mitral valve and the tricuspid valve. He was then sent to the ICU still intubated, which means he had a machine breathing for him, and still asleep. They kept him intubated for the night so that his body can focus on his heart and not have to worry about his breathing. He is still in ICU recovering, and will move to a lower acuity floor…probably by Friday. He has a few tubes draining any fluid that could be building up around his heart as well as an external pacemaker to make sure that his heart stays in a proper rhythm. They will monitor his heart rhythms over the next few days and if it remains normal they will remove the pacemaker. If not, they will place a permanent pacemaker before he leaves the hospital. When he went into surgery his pulmonary arterial pressure was higher than normal, due to the issue with his valves. We are hoping that he will continue to improve. We will be updating everyone on his status in the next few days.
